Content, Style and Behavior – Key pillars of Design

Technology marvels and availability of various downloaded tools and scripts over the Internet have made all of us good web designers. We hardly feel the necessity of any professional help while designing a web site and then when we start noticing that our website has failed to serve the purpose of bringing traffic or conversion, we get frustrated and ‘ego’ prevails over our senses as we loose all hopes of scoring points from Internet Marketing hence start scraping Internet and Web as merely ‘useless Investment’.

If the web design activity is logically segmented, it has got three parts – Content, Style and Behavior. Content is the message that you want to communicate to the world and the associated snippets. You might feel that you want to communicate a new discount package at this stage. So, you have been given a priority of a new package on the home page with its description of how it can benefit the community at large. The content and even one liner slogan have been finding increasing importance as the root of marketing and advertising lies in the heart of the statement of David Ogilvy, “If you're trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language in which they think”.

The style really matters to draw the attention of the traffic. An example is you want to make the header Arial, Bold, 12, Deep Blue and the body text Verdana, 10, Ash color that is simply style. As “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”, you put your best to make a decent style, which faces its acid test in front of the traffic. Anyhow, styles are generally grouped and segmented in any good web design tool to apply the style in a particular text/ portion of text, just used for reference as Tags in HTML. Cascading Style Sheet has gained wide popularity for its clear definition pattern and abilities of reuse.

Behaviors of the web pages are equally important as the user views the pages as per the behavioral properties that one applies in them. Say, you want the site should make the screen display 800x600 as soon as it opens up. It may be also be that you want certain portion of text to be displayed as pop-up units as soon as they are called or even by opening any particular page. You may also think to centrally align the pages in the browser when the traffic wants to view any of your web pages. Behavior seems to have becoming more and more pertinent as plenty of web browsers are dominating the market even beside Internet Explorer, the most commonly used web browser being default to Microsoft.

So a right combination of Content, Style and Behavior can only make your website presentable to the world, which can ensure a considerable amount of traffic.
