Google Sitemap

Google sitemap is an XML file which Google define to be helpful tool for spiders to crawl into a web site's inner pages.
Google's new sitemap protocol was developed in response to the increasing size, complexity and pages multiplicity of websites. Business websites, like shopping carts, often contained hundreds of products in their catalogues; while the popularity of blogs led to webmasters updating their blogs at least once a day, not to mention popular community-building tools like forums. As websites got bigger and bigger, it was difficult for search engines to keep track of all this material, and caused a problem of "skipping pages for the spiders.

By placing a formatted xml file with site map on your web server, you enable Search Engine crawlers (like Google) to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly.
Sitemap does not affect ranking, but it does allow search engines to make more accurate rankings and searches, and to index more pages in a search engine from one site.
In this sitemap.xml file the spiders can find a data about the inner pages that they can't determine themselves; such as changing frequency, page importance – you can show the spiders which page is more important then the other in grades from 1.0 to 0.0. And time of last update.

Before submitting your sitemap to Google, you will be requested to verify that this is your site. You will need to create a simple HTML file with a code you will get when signing up to Google webmasters tools. This will help Google know that you are the site owner.
