What is Directory? |
| Directory is a type of database or a device that holds a lot of information, containing descriptive information of variety of subjects. For example, a directory might contain entries describing people such as names, telephone numbers, email address, or network resources such as printers and fax machines. Directory can be different from general database that has been optimized for searching and to find information (as opposed to writing) structured data. These performance characteristics make directories ideal for implementing information that is comparative static in nature, but where ultra-fast access is needed to the optimal presentation of the applications that using it. Web directories carrying and organizing a lot of Web sites by subjects, it’s usually maintained by humans instead of software and that for a good reason. The searchers looks at sites organized in a series of categories and large menus. Web directories are usually much smaller than search engines' databases and that because the sites are looked at by human eyes and not by Spiders! In Internet, LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a standard way in order to implement directory services. Now, there are Different kinds of Directories; Simple DirectoryA Simple Directory allows you to submit your site under a specific category like Web Design and simply adds your site to the directory under Web Design. This type of directory is also called a FFA (Free for All) Directory. And that's pretty much what its stand for. Some sites use a different kind of software’s verification (Those Numbers and Letters that sometimes there asking to add) before adding your site to the list to make sure it's not a duplicate or “Robots” and to make sure your site actually exists. Many of the so-called FFA Directories have an extremely low number of lists listed in their directory and they will not going to do much regarding SEO but there are some acceptations like in Dmoz case. They don't reject your submission they simply bump the oldest listing to allow yours to be added. You can see that it won't take to much time for your site to get throwing out. You can join in that crazy race of submitting your site to those Directories every month, but the overall value of this type of directory is somewhat uncertain. Edited Directory - Edited directory, not only do they limit the sites contained in the directory, but they will decide what your link about your site will say. They actually edit and completely rewrite the description of your site. For the persons trying to find valuable and significant information obviously this is the most valuable type of resource. Just for an example; Yahoo has their edited directory, it will cost you $300 a year, and the crazy thing is that after you paid them they can decide not to except your site and they will not going to refund your money!!!. They have everything else under the sun including a search engine, and if you will look at there site a year ago, now there are trying to look like Google, I wonder why... Monitored Directory - Monitored Directory directories are a little more cautious about what gets listed in their directory and usually the content is monitories by a Human. Most of the time this type of directory lists your site as it is submitted if they do accept you. Try not to exaggerate too much about your site or it will be rejected. Make sure to avoid lots of capital letters and over used words! ----------------------------------------------------
